Archive No. 1 - Ideas Taking Root

Spring is full of new things. New plants popping up out of the ground, new wildlife exploring for the first time, and fresh ideas starting to take root. I've been tossing around the idea of starting a blog since then. A place where I could share more of my thoughts or inspiration behind the paintings I've created. I held off because I really am a terrible writer. I have a hard time pulling the thoughts in my head into something that sounds coherent - so this will most likely be an effort in doing something poorly until it can be done better. I hope you don't mind ciphering my rambling thoughts.

One of the things I love most about Spring is all of the fresh color after the long white Winter. There's something about everything turning green and coming back to life that feels so refreshing. I start looking for the daffodils in the wood line to begin poking their sunny heads out.

I had the idea to try to create a painting that really encapsulated the feeling of the new beginnings of Spring. I knew I wanted something a bit flowing, since the weather can still be a bit unpredictable in early Spring. I started a sketch of a girl with loose hair being carried by the wind. I use Procreate for all of my sketching and painting. I love this app because of how intuitive it is and how much it feels like painting or sketching in an actual sketchbook.

Once I had the sketch where I was happy with it, I started blocking in the colors that I wanted. I chose to go with a moodier darker color palette than what's usually used for Spring. I love the deep blues, purples, and pinks. I feel like it helps tie in the idea of emerging from Winter - when things can still be a little cold and blustery, but Spring in on its way.  I wanted my maiden to have golden hair, this would contrast well with the cool colors and also signify the warmth of the new season.

Herald of Spring
Here is the final image! Rendering the flowers was really fun. It felt like I was making a big bouquet of all of my favorite Spring blooms. I ended up adding a bit of a decorative border to help finish it off.

If you've taken the time to read through all of this, I really appreciate it! I hope that you will continue to check back for more peeks into the process of my paintings.
